Having Fun with New Applications of Creative Story

The Summer of 2015 will find us helping create stories with two new groups of individuals. In June we will be working with youth in a week-long Cleveland City Schools Summer Camp, encouraging reading and writing skills. July will find us working with a different type of Summer Camp with Trousdale School which serves high functioning adults with intellectual disabilities, providing academics and life skills for the purpose of learning independence.  Here’s how!

In both cases, the students will be exposed to the art of oral storytelling followed by encouragement and instruction to apply creative story practices. The City School students will be receiving instruction on ways to find and/or write their own stories for presentation at a family gathering at the end of camp, thereby using research, reading, writing, and oral skills.

At Trousdale the students will participate in the writing of some fun stories of their own, but they will also contribute to the writing of some marketing pieces that tell of the challenges of living with a disability, or working toward their dream job, or the importance of athletics in their lives.

In addition to building reading and writing skills, the application of story directly benefits participants who help create and share their stories by stimulating the mind, helping build community, reducing feelings of isolation, building pride and a sense of legacy.

Your donations help support our efforts of the use of story for cognitive and narrative therapeutic programs.
